TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) received the credentials of Luis Raul Estevez Lopez, the new ambassador of Guatemala to Taiwan, at the Presidential Office on Monday.
Lai said Estevez’s arrival marks a new milestone in the longstanding friendship between Taiwan and Guatemala. The president highlighted the growing closeness between the two countries in recent years, as demonstrated by the bilateral cooperation in healthcare, agricultural technology, and education, per the Presidential Office.
Lai thanked the Guatemalan government for consistently advocating for Taiwan in the international arena and supporting its international participation. He looked forward to continued mutual support and collaboration in the coming year.
Estevez pledged to strengthen the 90 years of diplomatic ties, noting that they represent a long history of sincere and close exchanges and continuous collaboration. He highlighted the shared values of peace, democracy, and respect for international law.
Respect for self-determination, national sovereignty, and non-interference in internal affairs has been the cornerstone of the relationship and will continue to guide its development, he added.
Estevez hoped that future generations in Guatemala and Taiwan would recognize today's efforts to solidify the partnership and foster well-being for the people of both nations.
