TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A delegation of Taiwanese officials from Taitung County, led by Magistrate Yao Ching-ling (饒慶鈴), visited Beijing over the weekend to discuss cross-strait relations and explore collaborative opportunities.
During a meeting at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse on Saturday, Yao met with Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) Chairman Song Tao (宋濤). Yao, a member of the Kuomintang, expressed support for the so-called “1992 Consensus” and opposition to Taiwan’s independence, according to UDN.
Speaking to reporters, Song cited recent remarks by Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) that China’s unification with Taiwan is “inevitable.” Representing Taitung County, Yao said she is willing to promote exchange and help ease cross-strait tensions.
The delegation aimed to negotiate the export of Taitung’s agricultural products and explore new collaboration opportunities, reported CNA. Additionally, Yao led a group of young students and professionals from Taitung to learn about technological advancements in China, according to UDN.
KMT Legislator Huang Chien-pin (黃建賓), who represents Taitung, also participated in the visit.
