TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan is expected to experience multiple cold waves over the next 10 days, with temperatures in some plains areas dropping below 10 degrees Celsius and the potential for snowfall in mountainous regions, meteorologist Daniel Wu (吳德榮) said on Sunday.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported the lowest temperature in Taiwan on Sunday morning was 9.2 C in Sanwan Township, Miaoli County. Wu noted temperatures rose slightly during the day, though radiative cooling is keeping plains areas at around 13-14 C, according to CNA.
Wu explained that European weather models from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) indicate weakening northeasterly monsoon winds during the day on Sunday, leading to sunny spells in the west and occasional rain in the east. However, a weather front is expected to arrive in the evening, bringing scattered rain to the north, east, and mountainous regions.
Another cold front is forecast to arrive on Tuesday, ushering in sunny and colder conditions. Wu said the cold, dry air associated with the continental cold air mass will send early morning temperatures in plains areas below 10 C.
From Thursday through the weekend, Wu predicts that cold air will continue to strengthen, causing further temperature drops. This period could see significant rainfall and the possibility of snowfall in high mountainous areas.
