TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Culture said Friday that artist Cheng I-hsin (鄭宜欣) was selected for a residency program in New York.
The ministry said in a press release that Cheng’s three-month program with the Triangle Arts Association will begin in March. She plans to merge Chinese characters with Western cultural elements through sculpture and performance, per CNA.
The Kaohsiung-born artist holds a master’s degree from Taipei National University of the Arts. Her work explores cultural identity, belonging, and the inheritance of memory.
Central to her art is printmaking, the process of transferring an image to another material, usually through a matrix or mold. Her works focus not just on the linguistic aspect of Chinese characters but their metaphorical significance.
Cheng has earned accolades such as the 2020 Contemporary Sculpture Lihpao Prize and the 2023 Young Artist Award. Taipei Cultural Center in New York said Ching would bring a fresh perspective to the program and foster creative exchanges.
