TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Friday attended the opening of newly constructed barracks at the Ching Chuan Kang Army Base near Taichung.
He said the comfortable high-quality surroundings for the conscripts would help recruit more talent and improve their focus on defense tasks, Radio Taiwan International reported. In his address, Lai emphasized the role of the military as a stable force protecting the safety of the people.
The president received a tour of the new facilities, cut the ribbon, had lunch with representatives of the soldiers, and handed out bonuses. Parts of the Army base were 50 years old, but the government had issued funds to invest in the renovation project.
Lai also referred to his recent visit to the new Liangshan Army base for special forces in Pingtung. He named both projects as examples of housing improvements for those who spend 24 hours a day defending the country.
