TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Presidential Office said Thursday that President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) had approved a request by the Cabinet for a new vote by the Legislative Yuan about opposition-backed amendments to the Constitutional Court Procedure Act approved last month.
The changes raised the threshold for members of the public to demand rulings on the constitutionality of key issues, per the Liberty Times. The opposition Kuomintang and the Taiwan People’s Party used their majority in the legislature to approve the amendments on Dec. 20.
The Cabinet described the new measures as “unreasonable,” and a threat to the Constitutional Court’s ability to probe issues of constitutionality. Government members hoped the new vote would allow for a more rational review of proposals related to the court.
According to official procedures, the Legislative Yuan will have to vote on the Cabinet’s request within 15 days, per CNA. At least 57 out of the 113 lawmakers need to vote in favor of the original amendments for the Cabinet motion to fail.
