TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Mainland Affairs Council demanded an apology Wednesday after a broadcast from China Central Television (CCTV) appeared on a large screen at Taipei’s New Year’s Eve celebration.
Shortly after Taipei's event concluded, passersby observed a large screen at the venue displaying programming from CCTV, China's official media outlet. This drew public concern, prompting questions about the city government's intentions, per CNA.
MAC condemned the Taipei City Government's broadcast of CCP media programs at a major public event. It demanded accountability, an apology, and a thorough review, per UDN.
Taipei’s Department of Information and Tourism explained that the issue was a serious oversight by staff, and they will hold the responsible parties accountable. Taiwan news channel TVBS, the event contractor, issued an apology, stating the broadcast occurred due to an autoplay function on a backup laptop connected to a screen during the event’s dismantling.
A video uploaded to social media showed the large screen in front of the Presidential Office Building broadcasting a variety channel from CCTV, featuring singing performances. The post quickly sparked heated discussions.
TVBS said it immediately conducted an internal review with hardware vendor B'in Live. They expressed deep regret for the inconvenience caused by this incident and promised to strengthen supervision in the future to prevent similar situations from happening again.
