TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan representative to the US Alexander Tah-ray Yui (俞大㵢) expressed optimism about closer Taiwan-US ties under Donald Trump at a flag-raising ceremony on Wednesday.
Yui said that Taiwan-US relations improved significantly during the Biden administration, according to CNA. The foundation of bilateral ties is strong, and maintaining peace and security in the Taiwan Strait is a shared consensus, he said.
Yui emphasized that Taiwan has long enjoyed bipartisan support in the US. Both Republican and Democratic administrations have upheld commitments to Taiwan’s security based on the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances, he said.
The representative added that the two countries share universal values such as democracy and human rights. They also share complementary and mutually beneficial industrial and economic relations.
Yui pointed out that since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, the US and other like-minded countries have promoted Taiwan Strait peace as an international consensus. The issue is frequently raised in international forums, he noted.
Trump will be sworn into office on Jan. 20. Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) will lead a delegation of lawmakers to attend.
