TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — At age 90, Cheng Chen Chin-Mei garnered cheers at a weightlifting competition in Taipei after raising a 45 kg bar to her waist.
In December, Cheng signed up for a senior deadlift competition, which had around 45 participants over 70, with the oldest 92, per Reuters. The event was organized by LKK Wellness (練健康), which promotes fitness training for middle-aged and elderly people.
Cheng began practicing weightlifting last year after she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. She said her granddaughter got her into the sport, which helped correct her posture and made her shoulders feel lighter.

“I want to tell all the old people to join the workout, you don’t need to work extremely hard, but this is to stay healthy,” Cheng said. She had a big smile as she lifted the bar to her waist before releasing it to the ground.
According to Cheng’s coach at LKK Wellness, "The hex bar dead-lift is an easy workout. It is similar to squats or sitting down and standing up.” He said it could help prevent muscle loss and minimize the risk of falls.
This year, Taiwan is projected to become a "super-aged society.” By 2039, seniors (age 65 or above) will account for 30% of the population.
The National Development Council said falling birth rates and longer life expectancy led to the trend. It warned that Taiwan’s demographic structure and aging population would continue to worsen in the long term.
The government has set up fitness centers with senior-friendly machines and equipment to encourage the elderly to exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
