TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) laid out his policy goals for the year in his New Year’s Day address on Wednesday.
In his speech, Lai reaffirmed the nation’s democracy as the “only path forward.” He said that political disputes must be resolved within the constitutional framework and reminded the public of their right to elect, recall, initiate, and hold referendums.
Safeguarding democracy
Lai emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait as crucial to global security and prosperity. “Taiwan must remain vigilant, increase its defense budget, strengthen its military capabilities, and demonstrate its resolve to protect the nation,” he said.
Taiwanese must unite to bolster societal resilience, respond to large-scale disasters, and deter external threats, Lai said. He called on the public to “collectively reject coercion and infiltration by foreign forces.”
Strengthening economic resilience
The president also prioritized economic resilience. Taiwan needs to be vigilant against geopolitical and global economic changes, he said. “Every industry, big or small, is vital to Taiwan’s national strength,” he said.
Lai pledged to continue supporting traditional industries and SMEs. Integrating technological applications will help Taiwan achieve digital and net-zero transformations while fostering diverse economic opportunities, he added.
Advancing social well-being
Lai listed measures to improve the lives of Taiwanese, including increasing the monthly minimum wage to NT$28,590 (US$871.06) and providing pay raises to public servants. Tax incentives will also be rolled out soon to encourage businesses to pay their employees better.
Single individuals earning below NT$446,000 annually and dual-income households earning below NT$892,000 will be exempt from taxes to reduce their living expenses, Lai said. Families with two young children and a combined income under NT$1.461 million will also receive benefits, he added.
As Taiwan becomes a super-aged society, the government will broaden cancer screening services, and promote public health under the "Healthy Taiwan" initiative, Lai said.
Embracing the future together
The president hoped that despite political differences Taiwanese could work together so the nation could continue forward and achieve even greater accomplishments. “There are many more incredible Taiwan stories to share with the world,” he said.
