TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Friday attended the launch of the Liangshan Army base for special forces in Pingtung County.
Due to the sensitive nature of the site, the president’s trip was not officially announced beforehand, the Liberty Times reported. The camp provides the possibility of training in the air, on land, in water, and even in the snow.
The Liangshan unit belongs to the Army Aviation and Special Forces Command. The military counts three other special forces groups, including teams within the military police and the marines.
In addition, the National Police Agency, the Coast Guard Administration, and the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau also maintained special units focusing on issues like the fight against terrorism.
Parachuting over land, sea, and forests are part of frequent drills for the Liangshan unit, the Army said. The members were also trained in a range of fighting techniques, including taekwondo, judo, and wrestling, and in diving, mountain survival, and counter-hijacking tactics.
The Army emphasized that the unit also takes part in disaster relief to remote areas during typhoons, considering their expertise with parachuting and transportation over difficult terrain.
