TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taipei District Court Friday ruled that the TPP's Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) and four other suspects can be released on bail.
The Taipei District Prosecutors Office Thursday indicted Ko and 10 others in connection with Core Pacific City and political donation cases, accusing them of corruption and other crimes. Five defendants in custody, including Ko were transferred to the Taipei District Court for trial.
Early Friday morning, the court ruled that Ko could be released on NT$30 million (US$915,000) bail with restrictions on leaving the country and changing his residence, per CNA.
In addition, the court ruled Core Pacific Chair Sheen Ching-jing (沈慶京) could be released on NT$40 million bail, Taipei City Councilor Angela Ying (應曉薇) on NT$15 million bail, former Taipei Deputy Mayor Pong Cheng-sheng (彭振聲) on NT$5 million bail, and former Taipei Office Director Lee Wen-tsung (李文宗) on NT$10 million bail. All are subject to travel restrictions and barred from contacting co-defendants or witnesses.
The Taipei District Prosecutors Office accused Ko of attempting to provide illegal benefits worth tens of billions of New Taiwan dollars to corporations, accepting NT$17.1 million in bribes, embezzling tens of millions in political donations, and amassing over NT$93.71 million in illicit gains with his accomplices. Thursday, prosecutors sought a combined 28 years and 6 months in prison for Ko.
