TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Five Thai nationals have been indicted for attempting to smuggle marijuana into Taiwan.
The Aviation Police Bureau said on Wednesday they uncovered a drug trafficking operation involving Thai nationals, who brought over 20 kg of marijuana into Taiwan under the guise of tourism, per CNA. Four suspects deliberately took different flights, arriving at separate terminals to evade detection.
Chang Tsung-lung (張驄瀧), a squad chief in the Aviation Police Bureau's Criminal Investigation Division, said that on Oct. 6, officials discovered suspicious images in four Thai nationals' checked bags at Taoyuan Airport. Chang said 20.28 kilograms of the category 2 narcotic marijuana were seized.

The drugs were confiscated, and the case was transferred to the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office. The suspects were indicted for violating the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act (毒品危害防制條例).
The following morning, police tracked down and arrested a fifth Thai individual at Terminal 1 as he was preparing to board a flight.
