TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan police seized 2.6 kilograms of marijuana hidden in Korean-style instant noodles at the border, CNA reported on Tuesday.
In July, the National Police Agency's Third Security Police Corps and Taipei Customs conducted random checks on international parcels from Thailand. After discovering marijuana, they reported the case to the Taipei District Prosecutors' Office for investigation.
The police arrested five suspects, including a man surnamed Kuo (郭) after a one-month investigation. The police said Kuo was found carrying 600 grams of marijuana and cannabis oil.
According to the police, the drug trafficking group had individuals purchase marijuana in Thailand and ship it to Taiwan via parcels. The suspects have gang affiliations, and the seized marijuana is valued at more than NT$3 million (US$93,000), the police said.
The suspect's lawyer, surnamed Chang (張), allegedly leaked case details to the drug trafficking group. Chang advised the suspects to delete evidence, the police said.
The police said Chang was transferred to the district prosecutors' office for investigation and released on NT$700,000 bail. Kuo and four other suspects were detained.
