TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Formosan Association for Public Affairs issued a press release on Tuesday applauding US President Biden’s signing of the National Defense Authorization Act for 2025, authorizing US$300 million in military aid to Taiwan.
FAPA said that the passage of the act challenges China’s groundless territorial claims over Taiwan and ensures the nation’s continued freedom and independence amidst increasing Chinese aggression. Furthermore, the act refutes China’s misinterpretation of United Nations Resolution 2758, per the press release.
FAPA said the act authorizes approximately US$895 billion in defense expenditures, including measures for the Department of Defense to use up to US$300 million to promote Taiwan-US security cooperation and strengthen Taiwan's defense capabilities.
FAPA said the act also incorporates principles outlined in the Bolster Act proposed by Republican Senator Pete Ricketts and Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen in May, paving the way for European NATO countries to provide defense support for Taiwan.
FAPA particularly welcomes the Bolster Act’s call for the US and European countries to oppose China’s “One China principle" and refute Chinese propaganda that falsely claims UN Resolution 2758 recognizes China’s territorial claims over Taiwan.
Kao Su-mei (林素梅), president of FAPA, called upon the incoming Trump administration to prioritize and strengthen countermeasures against China’s baseless territorial claims against Taiwan and check China’s increasingly aggressive behavior.
Kao said that Trump appointments such as Marco Rubio for Secretary of State, Mike Waltz as National Security Advisor, and Elise Stefanik for UN Ambassador are all well known for their firm support for Taiwan and opposition to China.
Given these appointments, Kao is confident the US will continue vital work that will be steadfast in its support for Taiwan and hardline on policies involving China.
