TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A 17-year-old McDonald's employee in Taipei died by suicide after allegedly being sexually assaulted by a supervisor and developing depression.
The Shilin District Prosecutors Office began investigating the case in late May after a police referral, per a press release. A social media post on Threads claimed the victim, the poster’s daughter, was sexually assaulted by a supervisor who used scheduling authority for exploitation, leading to depression and suicide after she resigned, per CNA.
The post also alleged that while McDonald’s quickly fired the perpetrator after a police report and company complaint, it failed to support the victim. McDonald’s Taiwan said it formed an investigative committee with external experts and internal legal representatives after receiving a sexual harassment complaint from a former employee in March, in accordance with the Act of Gender Equality in Employment.
After confirming the allegations, the company terminated the accused employee in May, citing a zero-tolerance policy for workplace bullying. It expressed deep regret over the former employee’s death, pledging full cooperation with law enforcement and offering condolences to the family.
The prosecutor’s office expressed deep sorrow over the death and urged the public to respect the family and avoid speculation. A prosecutor specializing in women's and children’s issues has been assigned to the case. The office has questioned the complainant, their legal representative, the accused, and defense counsel, repeatedly requested materials from McDonald’s, and prepared detailed inspection records.
