TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei Metro will operate nonstop for 42 hours during the New Year countdown celebrations, starting at 6 a.m. on Dec. 31 and running until midnight on Jan. 1.
The extended service will cover most MRT lines, except the Xiaobitan and Xinbeitou lines, according to the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation. The extended hours will accommodate the anticipated surge of revelers heading to Taipei City Hall Square for the countdown and the nearby Taipei 101 fireworks display.
Starting at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, trains on the Bannan (Blue) and Tamsui (Red) lines will operate on a tight schedule. Depending on passenger volume, some trains may bypass the Taipei City Hall and Taipei 101/World Trade Center stations, requiring passengers to walk a short distance to the event venues.
To avoid crowded stations, those leaving the festivities are advised to avoid Taipei City Hall and Taipei 101/World Trade Center stations. Instead, they can take the Green line at Nanjing Sanmin or Taipei Arena stations, which are about a 20-minute walk from either Taipei City Hall or Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall stations.
Passengers accessing the Nanjing Sanmin or Taipei Arena stations between midnight and 6 a.m. on Jan. 1 can enjoy a free ride using their EasyCard. The Green line (Songshan-Xindian Line) connects the Red, Orange, Brown, and Blue lines.
First-aid stations will be available at Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, Taipei City Hall, Taipei 101/World Trade Center, and Xiangshan stations.
During the extended service hours, there will be restrictions on transporting bicycles, large pet carriers, and double basses on the MRT. YouBike rental services around the event area will also be temporarily suspended.
In addition, the Maokong Gondola will extend its service hours, operating until 2 a.m. on Jan. 1. For more information on Taipei MRT service adjustments, refer to its website, Facebook page, or the “Go! Taipei Metro” (台北捷運Go) app.
