TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan helped remodel its ally Guatemala’s La Aurora International Airport ahead of Christmas.
Reports said Saturday the airport in Guatemala City struggled with outdated equipment and frequent breakdowns, per CNA. With assistance from the Taiwan embassy, new equipment was installed, and a food court opened its doors to the public on Friday.
Earlier, Taiwan also helped with new coats of paint inside and outside the terminal, plus updates to the airport’s sound system and lighting. The food court includes sockets for travelers to recharge their phones.
The overall result of the changes is a much brighter terminal. The hall also includes a Christmas tree and a board thanking Taiwan for its assistance on the project.
The embassy said a second phase will begin next year.
Airport management has repeatedly been criticized for failing to repair escalators and elevators, and for the absence of a functioning air conditioning system.
