TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Central Bank is unlikely to issue coins to mark Taiwan’s triumph at the WBSC Premier12 baseball championships in Japan, reports said Friday.
When Team Taiwan defeated defending champion Japan at the Nov. 24 finals, a wave of enthusiasm swept the country. One suggestion was that the Central Bank should mint a coin or set of coins to mark the event.
However, the bank was lukewarm about the idea, per CNA. Officials pointed out the process of preparing and making the coins takes at least six months.
The question is whether the public would still be as eager about buying the Premier12 coins as it is now, said Teng Yen-ta (鄧延達), director-general of the Department of Issuance at the Central Bank. In addition, the schedule and the budget for issuing coins had been set one year in advance.
While officials at the bank did not rule out baseball coins, they were taking a conservative approach, the report said.
Past special commemorative coins have featured Indigenous peoples and national parks, while Lunar New Year coins have focused on cultural themes. Chunghwa Post issued a set of commemorative stamps for the Premier12 victory.
