TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A fire that broke out in a PX Mart facility in Taichung has left one person dead and four in critical condition as search and rescue operations for missing persons continue.
At 1:24 p.m., the Taichung City Fire Department received a report of a blaze at a fresh food processing plant run by a subsidiary of PX Mart on Shatian Road, in Taichung City's Dadu District, per CNA. The fire department dispatched 34 firetrucks, eight ambulances, and 91 firefighters.
The fire department said the site is a newly constructed building with four above-ground floors and one basement level. The fire broke out on the second floor.

At 2:03 p.m., firefighters transported an approximately 45-year-old unconscious man, who escaped from the third floor, to Kuang Tien General Hospital for treatment via ambulance. However, his condition rapidly deteriorated and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Of the estimated 30 construction workers who were in the building when the fire broke out, 14 were rescued from the top floor, while five were rescued from the third floor. After these 19 workers were rescued, an estimated five to eight workers remained missing.
An additional four workers were then found and were listed in critical condition, per CNA. Firefighters are operating heavy machinery to clear debris and continue the search for missing persons.
