TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Rime and glaze ice were observed on Yushan on Thursday morning as a continental cold air mass impacted Taiwan.
The Central Weather Administration said that the temperature at Yushan Weather Station is continuing to drip. At 7 a.m., the temperature was -4.1 C.
The CWA said that rime forms when supercooled water droplets freeze upon contact with a solid surface. Glaze ice forms when supercooled rain or drizzle falls onto surfaces at or below freezing temperatures, creating a smooth, transparent ice layer.

Meteorologist Daniel Wu (吳德榮) said the continental cold air mass would keep northern Taiwan cloudy and cold all day, while central and southern regions will remain cool. Some low-lying areas may experience temperatures below 10 C.
Wu said there is a chance of isolated short-term rain in the north and east and central and southern mountainous regions. He said there is also a chance of snow flurries in the high mountains.
On Friday, skies will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy, while the east may experience occasional rain. Wu predicted the cold air would weaken, and temperatures would rise slightly. Mornings and evenings will remain chilly.

Another continental cold air mass will impact Taiwan from Saturday afternoon through Monday morning. Temperatures in low-lying areas could drop below 10 C.
On Saturday, the west will see mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. The east may have occasional short-term rain.
From Monday to Dec. 26, Wu forecasted the cold air will weaken, cloud cover will increase, and temperatures will gradually rise.
