TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The American Legislative Exchange Council condemned China’s misinterpretation of UN Resolution 2758 in a new model policy formed on Tuesday.
The policy called on the UN to oppose China’s distortion of the resolution and to refrain from using it to deny Taiwan’s participation in the UN system. ALEC also urged the UN secretary-general to remain neutral and to stop using the resolution to block Taiwanese nationals and media from visiting UN buildings or attending UN events.
ALEC CEO Lisa Nelson said: “This is an attack not only on Taiwan’s economy and freedom but also on the fundamental rights of its people. Idly standing by while this continues dishonors the values of liberty and self-governance that underpin democratic societies worldwide.”
ALEC called on the US government to work with other democracies to “counter China’s false narratives” regarding UN Resolution 2758.
The council also reaffirmed that the US and other like-minded partners’ “one China” policies are not equivalent to Beijing’s “one China” principle.
Nelson led a delegation to Taiwan in August for discussions with government officials, including Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴).
