TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The first snowflakes of the season were seen on Yushan on Monday afternoon.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported that temperatures on Yushan’s North Peak dropped to minus 3.9 degrees Celsius at 2:53 a.m. Snowflakes were briefly seen from 3:05 p.m. to 3:06 p.m., marking the first snowfall of autumn, though winter officially begins on Dec. 21.
Another brief flurry occurred at 3:30 p.m. The CWA said a continental cold air mass weakened during the day, but abundant atmospheric moisture caused heavier cloud cover over much of Taiwan, Kinmen, and Matsu.

Scattered showers were reported along Keelung’s north coast, eastern Taiwan, western mountainous areas, and Penghu. Mountains above 3,000 meters had conditions suitable for frost and rime formation.
The weather bureau said radiative cooling has led to significantly lower temperatures across many regions. A yellow cold surge advisory for temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius is in effect from Monday night to Tuesday morning in Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung, Changhua County, and Nantou County.
