UPDATE 8:30 p.m.: A woman from Singapore died in a separate accident on the same road.
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A Vietnamese student and a Singaporean woman died in separate accidents 4 kilometers apart on Provincial Highway No. 3 in Miaoli's Shitan Township, reports said Saturday.
The student, named Hoang, 19, lost control of his bike and slipped into the opposite lane where he hit an oncoming Toyota Camry driven by a man surnamed Ku (顧), 42, around 10 a.m., the Liberty Times reported. The student was taken to a hospital but did not recover from his grave injuries.
Hoang did not have a valid driver’s license for the motorcycle, reports said. He had been registered as a first-year student of engineering at Yu Da University of Science and Technology in Miaoli's Zaoqiao Township. The school contacted his relatives to assist them in traveling to Taiwan.
Around 2 p.m., a car with three family members from Singapore hit an electricity pole just 4 km away along the same road, per UDN. When a rescue team arrived on the scene, a man, 36, and a 5-year-old girl had left the car, but a woman, 33, was stuck in the rear seat. She was diagnosed with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and pronounced dead after arriving at a nearby hospital.
Police cautioned that the road was known for bends and slopes. Investigations into the precise circumstances of both accidents are ongoing.
