TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Railway Cooperation said Saturday that the reconstruction of Xiaoqingshui Bridge on the North Link Line has been completed ahead of schedule and will open to two-way rail traffic next Saturday.
Typhoon Gaemi struck Taiwan in July and caused a surge in Xiaoqingshui Creek. This triggered massive mudslides that destroyed the bridge on the western main track, per CNA.
The damaged section operated on a single track along the eastern main line. The new bridge, along with its tracks, overhead lines, and signaling system, has been completed, and pre-service inspections and train testing are underway.
Originally scheduled to reopen on Dec. 28, it will now open a week earlier. Xiaoqingshui Bridge is located in Hualien’s Xiulin Township, connecting Horen and Chongde stations.
TRC Chair Tu Wei (杜微) emphasized the importance of restoring the two-way service on the North Link Line ahead of schedule. This will enable the TRC to maximize capacity for passenger services during upcoming peak travel periods, including New Year's Day, Lunar New Year, and Tomb Sweeping Festival, per LTN.
TRC will also implement a phased plan to reinforce the slopes, bridges, and tracks along the Eastern Trunk Line to ensure the ongoing safety of railway operations.
