TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Frost and rime were observed on Yushan on Saturday as a cold air mass moved southward from China.
The Central Weather Administration reported overcast skies and fog at the Yushan weather station by 8 a.m., leading to poor visibility. With temperatures of -1.6 C and strong northwest winds, frost and rime formed on cold surfaces, per CNA.
Both frost and rime are solid forms of water. While frost and rime may appear similar, they form under different conditions.
Frost forms when water vapor transitions directly from gas to solid on a cold surface. Rime forms when supercooled water droplets freeze upon contact with a cold surface.
Northern Taiwan will experience the brunt of the cold air mass, with temperatures ranging from 12 to 17 C. Central and southern Taiwan will be slightly warmer, with highs of 20 to 23 C, per CNA.
Offshore islands like Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu will see temperatures between 16-19 C, 12-17 C, and 11-13 C, respectively. Scattered showers are expected in windward areas, including Keelung's north coast, Taipei, Hualien, and northern mountain regions.
