TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — National Taiwan Normal University said Friday that starting next year students can waive English classes if they pass a certain proficiency level.
If students achieve Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) B2 in English listening, speaking, reading, and writing within the past three years, they are permitted to waive English I and II, per CNA. If they reached C1, they can also waive English III.
Vice President for Academic Affairs Liu Mei-hui (劉美慧) said this measure among universities is in response to globalization. It allows students to improve their English skills while enjoying diverse exemption options.
The university said English I and II are foundational courses that focus on enhancing students’ English speaking and writing skills. English III has been transformed into an English for Specific Academic Purposes course.
Common Core Education Committee Director Chang Pei-chin (張珮青) said the school provides resources that not only enhance students’ language abilities but also foster respect for different cultures. In the future, language proficiency will become the most powerful tool, she added.
