TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Interior Deputy Minister Tung Chien-Hung (董建宏) said the government will promote old house renovations on Tuesday.
According to the interior ministry, over five million homes in Taiwan are over 30 years old, accounting for more than half of all residences. The ministry said that rebuilding these houses in the short term is challenging, per CNA.
Tung said renovations will focus on issues like seismic reinforcement, water leaks, falling tiles, and outdated wiring. As Taiwan is set to become a super-aged society next year, renovations like installing elevators and upgrading bathrooms can improve the elderly’s safety and living quality.
Tung added renovations can lower carbon emissions by 60% to 70% compared to reconstruction.
The interior ministry said the government will support home renovations through policy integration, streamlined application processes, and expert guidance.
Tung pledged the ministry would continue coordinating with residents and encouraging construction companies to participate.
