TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The New Taipei City Council on Thursday approved a record NT$222.4 billion (US$6.8 billion) budget for next year.
The budget projects over NT$209 billion in revenue, NT$611.1 million less than the original estimate, and NT$222.4 billion in expenditures, resulting in a nearly NT$13.5 billion deficit. The city will borrow NT$114.4 billion to address the shortfall, per CNA.
Originally projected at NT$223.1 billion, the expenditure was cut by NT$647 million during the review process. The city government will adjust the remaining budget imbalance except for the deleted items.
After adjustments, the 2025 expenditure is a 4.4% increase from the previous year. During regular sessions, the council passed 959 bills, including the 2025 general budget, and emphasized adherence to budget execution rules.
Budget cuts or deletions cannot be supplemented during implementation, except for higher-level subsidies or rebates. Agencies must submit detailed implementation plans to council members before the annual budget review and cannot alter plans during the execution period.
The council has also resolved that all New Taipei City government agencies should not modify their original implementation plans during the budget execution period. Additionally, they must provide detailed implementation plans for each unit to the council members before the annual budget review.
Concerns over workplace bullying were also addressed. The council urged the city government to establish effective complaint channels and prevention measures to safeguard workers.
