TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two Taiwanese officials are in the US to meet with President-elect Donald Trump's transition team and create ties with the incoming administration.
National Security Council (NSC) Deputy Chair Lin Fei-fan (林飛帆) and NSC Deputy Secretary-General Hsu Szu-chien (徐斯儉), along with several of their staff, are in Washington, D.C., according to five sources from Reuters. They will meet people tied to Trump's transition team for meetings throughout this week.
Reuters could not confirm the agenda or which US officials would attend the meetings. The Taipei representative office in the US and Trump’s transition team did not respond to requests for comment.
One of the sources said that Trump's nominees for top positions in his cabinet would not join, given China’s strong opposition to talks between US and Taiwanese officials. A second source said "Republicans likely to populate mid-tier political positions" in the incoming administration are likely to be present.
The Taiwanese officials’ visit to Washington comes as China conducted some of its biggest military exercises in years near the Taiwan Strait. By stepping up military activities in the region, Taiwan said Beijing seeks to set a "red line" for the incoming Trump administration.
