TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The New Taipei District Court on Wednesday approved the detention of former Ministry of Labor official Hsieh Yi-jung (謝宜容) in a case of corruption unrelated to a suicide in a bullying case at her department.
Hsieh, the director of the northern regional office at the Workforce Development Agency (WDA), was dismissed last month for abusive behavior against her staff, including a 39-year-old man who ended his life at work. However, Wednesday’s investigation focused on her alleged use of public funds to purchase gifts and on irregular practices in the redecoration of her offices, per CNA.
Investigators raided 22 offices and homes in New Taipei Tuesday (Dec. 10), while calling in 23 people for questioning. Following the interrogations, prosecutors released 12 on bail as suspects and 11 others as witnesses without charge.
The court agreed with the prosecutors’ arguments that Hsieh might pose a flight risk, and tamper with evidence or collude with witnesses. As a result, the court ruled that she will be held incommunicado.
Those experiencing thoughts of suicide should immediately seek help by calling the Taiwan Suicide Prevention Center at 1925, or Taiwan Lifeline International at 1995. Foreign residents can call the Community Services Center at 02-2836-8134 (business hours) or 0932-594-578 (after hours).
