TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳) said her ministry will increase staff salaries next year to take the lead in a Cabinet policy to drive wage growth.
Liu said salaries for interior ministry employees and contractors will increase by at least 1.1 times, bringing the ministry’s minimum monthly salary up to NT$31,449 (US$967.3), according to a Wednesday press release. Liu said the decision was made in response to the Cabinet’s policy of the “government as the engine of wage growth.”
The press release said Liu visited the ministry cleaning staff to thank them for their work before she made the announcement. Liu said the ministry would improve working conditions in addition to raising pay.
The labor ministry said in September the minimum wage will also increase next year. The minimum monthly wage will increase by 4% from NT$27,470 to NT$28,590 and the hourly minimum wage will rise by 3.8% from NT$183 to NT$190.
A government report released in April showed the average income was about NT$59,000 per month in 2023. The report also showed debt in below-average income households grew for the 17th consecutive year.
