TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A group of Taiwanese spouses donated hundreds of white rice bags to flood victims in Malaysia, reports said Tuesday.
The Formosa Women Organization of Malaysia (FWOM) wanted the public to feel the truth behind the motto “Taiwan can help,” per CNA. The group consists mostly of “Taiwanese daughters-in-law” or Taiwanese spouses of Malaysian men.
The disaster area covered parts of nine states in the Southeast Asian nation, with an estimated 122,000 residents forced to leave their homes. Amid reports of the evacuations, the FWOM called on Taiwanese and others living in the country via social media to pledge white rice for the victims.
Within 12 hours, the action had led to the donation of 500 bags of rice. The campaign showed flood victims that “Taiwan can help” was more than an empty slogan, and that Taiwanese living in Malaysia would assist residents in need, FWOM said.
