TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will organize a Taiwan Gender Equality Week in New York City next March to put the country’s achievements under the international spotlight, reports said Tuesday.
The Nov. 23-24 “Leap Workshop” paved the way for the 2025 event by inviting around a hundred youth leaders and experts from different countries to Taipei, MOFA said in a news release. In addition to discussing the latest trends in gender equality, the workshop co-hosted by the Foundation for Women’s Rights Promotion and Development also reflected on ways to help NGOs in Taiwan improve their cross-border contacts.
The list of prominent participants in the Taipei event included World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts World Board Chair Candela Gonzalez, Avipsa Prasai of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women in Nepal, and Hori Moriko, the national president of the Women’s Federation for World Peace International in Japan.
While the Taiwan Gender Equality Week in New York has been taking place each March since 2020, next year’s edition will be more important as the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women meeting that month will be looking back at 30 years of work. Youth representatives and NGO workers from Taiwan will attend meetings in the margin of the UN event to emphasize their country’s contributions and achievements in gender equality.
MOFA highlighted the fact that Taiwan ranked No. 6 in the world and No. 1 in Asia for gender equality according to the 2023 rankings by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Radio Taiwan International reported.
