TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – In an era dominated by social connections and constant interaction, an innovative "silent dinner project" is being offered at one of Taipei's most prestigious landmarks.
Ce La Vi Taipei, the sophisticated rooftop venue in Xinyi District known for its vibrant social scene, is transforming into an unexpected sanctuary for mindful solitude this winter season.
Against the backdrop of a social media landscape flooded with gathering invitations and apps like Timeleft promoting dining with strangers, a refreshing counter-movement celebrating the “art of solitude" is taking root.
Taiwan’s online media platform Nonsense has pioneered this shift by reimagining December – traditionally the peak of social festivities – as "Solitude Month," inspiring restaurants across the city to embrace the concept of mindful solo dining as a refined lifestyle choice.
In a surprising twist, Ce La Vi Taipei, the city's high dining establishment and a neighbor to the iconic Taipei 101, has partnered with experimental event curator ActionLAB to craft a unique experience. The venue, usually pulsing with the city's most exclusive parties, will offer a peaceful haven for those seeking meaningful solitude in December.
At a media preview on Tuesday, the experience was thoughtfully curated. Each guest was provided their own private dining space, complete with headphones playing music by contemporary artists like Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.
This immersive approach creates an intimate bubble of tranquility, allowing diners to focus entirely on their culinary journey and personal reflection, even while surrounded by the restaurant's usual vibrant atmosphere.
The carefully crafted menu showcases the venue’s culinary excellence: beginning with a sophisticated ox tongue brioche paired with dill-smoked salmon, followed by a vibrant kale and olive salad, and a comforting chestnut sweet potato soup. The main courses elevate the experience with aromatic garlic spicy tomato risotto and perfectly chargrilled veal ribs.
A delicate Earl Grey tea mousse provides an elegant finale, complemented by two signature cocktails at the iconic Sky Bar.
"Solitude can be as meaningful a choice as socializing," reflects Lois Lin (林仲燕), Ce La Vi Taipei's PR representative. "We created this concept from a deep understanding of both the desire for and the awkwardness around dining alone.”
Lin said that hosting the event at Ce La Vi Taipei, a space synonymous with social gatherings, adds a powerful layer of contrast that makes the experience even more meaningful.
This exclusive dining event will take place on Dec. 22 only, with seatings at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m, limited to a group of 20 guests per session. The experience is priced at NT$2,999 (US$92) per person and online reservations are required.
