TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) landed in the US territory of Guam on Wednesday evening (Dec. 4) as part of his tour of the Pacific.
Lai arrived in the presidential aircraft Air Force 3701 from Tuvalu and was welcomed by Guam Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and American Institute in Taiwan Managing Director Ingrid Larson, per CNA. Due to the time of his arrival, Lai’s motorcade headed directly for his hotel after the delegation was greeted.
Footage published by Now News after Lai arrived showed flags of the US, Guam, and Taiwan lining the streets. Flags from the three locations also decorated the airport and the hotel where Lai will stay.
Lai will visit Guerrero at the governor’s mansion Thursday where the pair will reportedly share breakfast and tea. Guerrero told Kuam News on Tuesday she was excited to meet Lai and would discuss tourism with him.
Guerrero said Lai is expected to depart Guam the same day after attending a lunch hosted by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office. Lai will visit Palau on the next stop of his Pacific tour.
The tour began on Friday and has included stops in the Marshall Islands, Hawaii, and Tuvalu. The trip is Lai’s first official overseas visit as head of state.
