TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent an advisory to Taiwanese in South Korea Tuesday (Dec. 3) following the temporary imposition of martial law.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol at 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday declared martial law in an impromptu address. However, early on Wednesday, the South Korean National Assembly passed an emergency resolution to lift the martial law decree.
At 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Yoon announced that he would accept the National Assembly's resolution, lift martial law, and withdraw troops. MOFA said it is monitoring the situation, maintaining communication with South Korea's foreign ministry, and taking measures to ensure the safety of Taiwanese in the country.
MOFA advises Taiwanese to refrain from participating in local political associations, rallies, or demonstrations, and to avoid approaching related areas. It also reminds those currently traveling in South Korea to prioritize their safety.
If Taiwanese in South Korea encounter emergencies or require assistance, they are encouraged to contact the emergency hotline of Taiwan's Representative Office in Korea at +82-10-9080-2761 or the Busan Office at +82-10-4537-7961 for necessary support.
