TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) arrived in the Marshall Islands on Tuesday (Dec. 3) for his first state visit since taking office.
As part of his multi-country “Smart and Sustainable Development for a Prosperous Austronesian Region Tour,” Lai arrived in the Marshall Islands' capital Majuro at noon, despite heavy wind and rain, per CNA. Marshall Islands President Hilda Heine greeted him, while students waved Taiwan flags and held up a banner reading "Iokwe" (hello).
During a welcome ceremony, Heine said that in Marshallese culture, rain symbolizes blessings, and Lai's flight brought blessings to the partnership. Heine said it was an honor that the Marshall Islands was the destination of Lai's first overseas visit.

Heine said Lai's state visit also signifies “a bilateral relationship that is mature, one that has withstood the test of time, and one that I'm confident will continue to grow and become stronger in the years to come.” She said that Taiwan's government and people “are very close and dear to our hearts" because they see in him and Taiwanese people "a genuine willingness to help wherever and whenever you can."
She thanked everyone who made Lai's trip possible. Heinie concluded her remarks by saying "xiexie ni" (thank you) in Mandarin.
This is the first country Lai has officially visited since taking office. He thanked Heine, First Gentlemen Thomas Kijiner Jr., friends from all sectors of the Marshall Islands, and local Taiwanese expatriates for their warm welcome.

Lai said that in Taiwan, there is a similar saying about blessings brought by water: "When water comes, flowers (good fortune) follow." Nevertheless, Lai said he was pleased there was a break in the rain for his flight to land.
Lai added that the two countries share a traditional Austronesian culture and the values of freedom and democracy. The president said Taiwan and the Marshall Islands are “like family and are also close partners who support each other.”
The president said that the sides have mutually supported each other and look forward to observing cooperative projects."Together, we are creating a brighter future for both of our peoples," said Lai.
He said through joint efforts the two countries can advance their development and create further opportunities for collaboration. He closed by saying “kommol tata,” (thank you) in Marshallese.
Lai is scheduled to deliver a speech at the country's parliament (Nitijela), before meeting with Nitijela Speaker Brenson Wase. He will then meet with Heine and her cabinet.
Next, Lai will attend a ceremony marking the completion of Majuro Hospital AI and Telemedicine Center. In the evening, the president will attend a state banquet hosted by Heine.
