TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi voiced support for Taiwan's participation in international organizations during a phone call with President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) in Hawaii on Monday (Dec. 2).
Presidential Office Spokesperson Karen Kuo (郭雅慧) described the call as warm and cordial, according to CNA. Pelosi welcomed Lai to the US and extended her congratulations on his recent election victory.
During the conversation, Pelosi reiterated her strong support for Taiwan's inclusion in international organizations, citing her previous advocacy efforts for Taiwan at the World Health Organization (WHO). She emphasized her commitment to continuing these efforts, stating that the exclusion of Taiwan would have "unimaginable consequences" for regional security and the global economy.
The two also discussed the issue of avoiding double taxation between Taiwan and the US Pelosi highlighted the bipartisan support Taiwan enjoys in Congress and underscored the importance of resolving this matter.
Lai's stop in Hawaii is part of a week-long visit to the Pacific, according to Reuters. His itinerary includes visits to the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, and Palau.
