TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese boxer Huang Hsiao-wen (黃筱雯) won gold at the World Boxing Cup Finals on Saturday (Nov. 30), defeating Mongolia’s Yesugen Oyuntsetseg 4-1 in the women’s 54 kg final.
Huang advanced to the finals after defeating Thailand’s Apisada Tantawa 5-0 on Thursday and Brazil’s Tatiana Chagas 5-0 on Friday. Her opponent in the final, Oyuntsetseg, won bronze at last year’s Hangzhou Asian Games.
Huang brought back Taiwan’s first Olympic boxing medal in 2021. Since her elimination in the round of 16 at the Paris Olympics, Huang has been dedicated to training, per CNA.
Coach Liu Zong-tai (劉宗泰), admitted that there was immense pressure before the match, especially after Huang accidentally fractured her right big toe during training. However, the gold medal has boosted Huang's confidence following the Paris Olympics setback.
The boxer will prioritize injury recovery and is expected to rest until February, Liu said. He also praised the effectiveness of their recent altitude training in Japan and suggested they might incorporate it into future training plans as they build toward the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.
