TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Wang Yi-chuan (王義川) will become the legislature’s newest lawmaker as early as next week, the Central Election Commission said on Wednesday (Nov. 27).
Wang will take over Hung Sun-han's (洪申翰) legislator-at-large seat for the DPP after Hung was promoted to labor minister on Nov. 21. The Central Election Commission said it will complete its part of the process to confirm Wang as a legislator by Monday at the latest, per CNA.
The commission noted that legislators-at-large are replaced according to a party’s list order. It said it received a letter from the legislature to begin replacing Hung and will respond within 15 days.
The commission said this could be completed by Friday but will probably be next week. After completing the process the judiciary will assist the legislature to complete the legal requirements for Wang to take the oath of office, it said.
Wang is the DPP’s policy committee director and will move up to 13th on the party’s list after Hung vacated the 4th spot. Wang was born in Tainan and served as Taichung’s transport director before joining the DPP’s party list.
Wang and other DPP members opposed relaxing Taiwan's national security regulations in April. In May, the Chinese government said he and four others would be punished for "instigating cross-strait confrontation,” but did not say what this would entail.
