TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Paraguay will soon sign a visa-free travel agreement with Taiwan.
Paraguay Foreign Minister Ruben Ramirez Lezcano arrived in Taiwan on Wednesday (Nov. 27) and will sign the "Agreement on Mutual Visa Exemption for Ordinary Passports" with his Taiwan counterpart Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) during his visit.
Upon landing in Taipei, Ramirez reaffirmed Paraguay’s support for Taiwan and said he hoped to further strengthen the close friendship between the two countries with this four-day trip, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ramirez is slated to meet with President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu (吳釗燮). He will also visit cultural and economic sites, including Lungshan Temple, and the National Center for Traditional Arts.
Ramirez has been a long-time advocate for Taiwan-Paraguay relations and Taiwan’s international participation, MOFA said. Paraguay President Santiago Pena has consistently supported Taiwan in international forums such as the UN General Assembly and World Health Assembly.
The foreign ministry pledged to deepen cooperation with Paraguay.
Earlier this month, Paraguay Senate President Basilio Gustavo Nunez Gimenez visited Taiwan. He engaged with Lin on how to deepen bilateral ties and enhance cooperation in education and public health.
Paraguay is Taiwan’s sole South American ally.
