TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Mobile announced Tuesday (Nov. 26) that in collaboration with satellite company Lynk Global, it has successfully tested space base station technology.
Taiwan Mobile in a press release said with this technology mobile phones can connect directly to low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, effectively turning the satellite into a massive base station, per CNA.
The telecom company explained that in remote areas such as mountainous regions where traditional base station signals cannot reach, mobile phones can use existing mobile network bands to maintain uninterrupted communication via direct satellite connection.
With Lynk Global’s satellites, Taiwan Mobile has become the first telecom operator in Taiwan to achieve this milestone, the company said.
Lynk Global CEO Ramu Potarazu said that the success in Taiwan proves that Lynk Global’s technology can overcome Taiwan’s diverse geographical environment and lays the foundation for future commercial applications.
