TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Team Taiwan’s victory in the Premier12 championship has ignited a passion for baseball which could carry over to the upcoming opening of the Asia-Pacific International Baseball Training Centers in Tainan in mid-February, bringing top international teams for spring training.
Korea’s Lotte Giants and the NC Dinos have already inked deals to use the new facility for spring training. Tainan's Uni-Lions will also make the facility their home training base, per CNA.
The Asia-Pacific International Baseball Training Centers will be comprised of two standard stadiums, two youth stadiums, infield training fields, pitching and batting areas, and an indoor training facility. Construction on the main stadium began on Sept. 28, 2020, with the Tainan City Government expected to soon transfer the right to operate the facility.
Tainan City Bureau of Sports told reporters the main stadium is in the process of interior decoration, including air-conditioning installation and testing. Outdoor landscaping and parking lot construction are also underway, with all stadium hardware, such as seating, protective nets, and bullpen areas, expected to be completed on Jan. 10, with the stadium available for use by mid-February next year.
Before the opening of the new stadium, an exhibition tracing the history of baseball in Tainan will open at the Asia-Pacific International Baseball Training Centers on Saturday and run until Sunday. The exhibition will feature outstanding baseball players, significant moments in local baseball history, and the development of the Uni-Lions.
