TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Work began on the construction of two new buildings at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University Tainan Campus on Friday (Nov. 22) as part of an academia-industry collaboration with electronics firms.
Wistron Corp. and Phison Electronics Corp. have invested in the construction of two buildings on the NYCU campus that will be named after them, per CNA. The buildings will cost NT$2.3 billion (US$71 million) and are expected to open in 2027.
The Tainan Economic Development Bureau said the buildings will be used to work on AI development, AI industrialization, and public-private technology collaborations. It said the buildings will be important for developing Tainan’s AI talent base.
In a September Instagram post announcing the project, NYCU said the buildings are a donation from the companies and the project will not cost it anything.
NYCU said the initiative shows Wiston and Phison’s strong support for university education and technological innovation. “It will not only bring us more advanced technologies and research opportunities but will also make a significant contribution to the entire industrial ecosystem,” it said.
Wistron Corp. is known for manufacturing notebook computers, personal computers, and other communications-related products. Phison Electronics Corp. manufactures and markets USB drives, flash memory controllers, integrated circuits, and others.
