TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Renowned Taiwanese artist Huang Ben-rei’s (黃本蕊) heartwarming solo exhibition, “Embrace! With Your One Ear and My One Ear, We Become One” at Eslite Gallery, marks the return of her beloved character, Nini the bunny.
Huang introduced Nini in 2008, and the character has become her closest creative companion. Her new work, "Sheep Don't Count Sheep, Nini Does" pays homage to American author Margaret Wise Brown's classic work, "Sheep Don't Count Sheep."
Through Nini, the artist depicts the nuances of contemporary social culture, particularly resonating with the younger generation. Works like "Silly Bunnies Checking In” and "Fashionable Late" delve into the complexities of introverts.
Nini, a symbol of comfort and resilience, has captured the hearts of many. Nini's expressive eyes and gentle demeanor offer solace and understanding.
In this exhibition, Nini takes on new dimensions, transcending the canvas to become a three-dimensional felt sculpture.
In the exhibition featuring 26 new works, Nini hops from the canvas, transforming into a sculpture adorned in a vibrant red cape. This bold move marks the beginning of Nini's adventure to find the “big bad wolf,” which symbolizes temptation, fear, and the unknown.
Inspired by the classic fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood,” the sculpture “Looking for Her Wolf” reimagines Nini’s journey of self-discovery and willingness to confront challenges, according to the press release.
Huang’s artwork often reflects on the human condition, particularly in times of uncertainty. In “Valhalla Calling,” Nini is depicted as shedding worldly attachments, emphasizing the importance of inner peace and spiritual growth.
Through Nini, Huang explores the complexities of human emotions and the impact of societal changes. Her work delves into themes of love, loss, and the search for meaning.
As the world evolves, Nini remains a constant source of comfort and inspiration. Her unwavering presence reminds us to embrace life’s challenges with courage and compassion.
This exhibition, which runs until Dec. 14, invites viewers to embark on a journey of self-discovery and emotional healing.
