TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – National Development Council Minister Paul Liu (劉鏡清) on Thursday (Nov. 20) named Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Taichung as the cities where Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company will base new fabs.
His statement followed comments by Economics Minister Kuo Jyh-huei (郭智輝) on Wednesday that the world’s largest contract chip maker would launch a new factory in Taiwan each year during the next 10 years. Politicians have voiced concern that TSMC might focus on building more overseas capacity, amid projects in Japan, the United States, and Germany.
Facing questioning by lawmakers, Liu said that over the next three years, TSMC was not only planning factories in Kaohsiung and Tainan, but also in Taichung, per CNA. The minister emphasized that the government would provide the required water and electricity for the production of semiconductors.
Legislators also continued the debate about whether the TSMC plant in Arizona would host a celebration of its completion soon. Kuo’s statements indicating there would be such an event were contradicted by TSMC founder Morris Chang (張忠謀).
As a member of the board at TSMC, Liu said he was unaware of any celebrations, though he had received an invitation to a board meeting scheduled for the US in February.
