TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — India’s Tata Electronics agreed to buy a majority stake in electronics manufacturer Pegatron’s iPhone plant in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, industry sources said.
According to the agreement, Tata will hold 60% and run daily operations, sources explained, per Reuters. Pegatron will hold the rest and provide technical support.
According to one source, Tata and Pegatron plan to apply for approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI). Another source said the deal was made at the iPhone factory on Friday (Nov. 15).
Tata declined to comment on the matter. Apple and Pegatron did not respond to Reuters’ inquiries.
Tata operates an iPhone assembly plant in Karnataka state which it took over from Wistron, another Taiwanese electronics manufacturer, in October 2023.
