TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A retired officer of the Taiwan Navy stirred controversy after he attended a military air show in Zhuhai, China this week and made statements to reporters praising the accomplishments of China’s air force.
Retired Lieutenant Commander Lu Li-shih (呂禮詩) was interviewed by reporters at the International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition, which began on Tuesday (Nov. 13).
In a clip that spread quickly in both Taiwan and China, Lu gushes over the military equipment on display, saying, “I want to share the truth and tell Taiwanese viewers how strong our China is.” He appeared to praise “Chinese national integration and rejuvenation,” reported CNA.
After Lu’s remarks were reported, the Ministry of National Defense (MND), the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), and DPP legislators all weighed in to criticize Lu. Legislator Lin Chu-yin (林楚茵) called Lu’s remarks “disgusting.”
In a statement, the MND urged retired officers to be mindful of their words and actions to avoid damaging the nation’s reputation. The MND said that because Lu retired at the rank of a lieutenant commander rather than a general or flag officer, he is not subject to the same penalties that higher ranked officers would face, such as being stripped of rank or losing pension.
The MAC called Lu’s remarks “deeply regrettable” but said the government does not intend to pursue any punitive action against him. MAC deputy chief Liang Wen-chieh (梁文傑) said the government’s policy is clear that China and its military forces that threaten Taiwan should never be commended in such a manner.
On Thursday (Nov. 14), Lu went on a CTI television program and doubled down on his statements, even commending China’s military’s advances, and expressing his admiration for the level of confidence shown by the Chinese people. During his remarks, he also criticized the ability of Taiwanese forces.
