TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Police in Japan’s Aichi Prefecture detained a Taiwanese man on suspicion of having fraudulently withdrawn 2 million yen (NT$418,000, US$12,800) from a Japanese woman’s bank account, reports said Thursday (Nov. 14).
The suspect was an unemployed 21-year-old man named Li (李), per CNA. In August, a man posing as a police officer reportedly told Li to take three bank cards from a 70-year-old woman in Shizuoka Prefecture.
The suspect then used the cards to withdraw the money from her accounts via an ATM. Facing police questioning, Li admitted to his actions, saying he had financial problems and needed money, Tokai TV reported.
He also said he traveled to Japan after a Taiwanese man had told he could make money there taking part in scams.
